Question by summertime: what would make a supposedly "new" carpet become discolored and dirty appearing WITHOUT reason? This is a serious question. I believe that I may the tenant of a slum-lord who uses cheap material that appear nice, but quickly deteriorate. The carpet in my new apartment seems to be getting darker each time I vacuum. Is it cheap? Or what could cause this? Best answer for what would make a supposedly "new" carpet become discolored and dirty appearing WITHOUT reason?:

Only thing I can think of, if it's on cement and the cement has too much moisture, that could be a possibility. Is there a carpet pad underneath? Don't expect the landlord to use top quality carpeting. The one thing you should do, to protect yourself, have him take a look at the carpeting and ask him, I don't understand this, why is the carpet keep getting darker and darker? That's all you want to ask him. Just don't let him throw it back at you with, "you" must have done something to make it look like this. Don't want to scare you, because he may not even say anything like that. But there's always a chance that he might. The point to this whole thing is, when it comes time for you to move, you want to be sure he doesn't take this off your security deposit, because it isn't your fault. Don't mention your vac. He may jump on that. Some landlords are notorious when it comes to security deposits. I would think if the problem was moisture, then you would feel the moisture like on humid days when everything feels wet. So I guess it comes down to I've never heard of a color change like you're experiencing. That's a 1st for me. Maybe someone else has an answer for you. I would still bring it to your landlords attention.
