NEW YORKâ€"Yankee captain Derek Jeter fractured his ankle fielding a ball in the 12th inning of New York's playoff loss to the Detroit Tigers early Sunday morning, and Jeter will miss the rest of the season, the Yankees said.

Jeter, 38, was moving to his left when he fielded the ground ball off the bat of Detroit's Jhonny Peralta, and suddenly crumpled to the ground, screaming in pain.

Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees reacts after he injured his leg in the 12th inning against the Detroit Tigers during game one of the American League Championship Series on Oct. 14, 2012, in New York.

He was helped off the field soon after, and X-rays confirmed a fracture in the ankle. The recovery time is roughly three months, Yankee general manager Brian Cashman said, meaning Jeter will be ready for spring training but won't be back for the rest of the playoffs.

"He has a fractured ankle, and he's going to be down for this series and the remaining series. It is about a three-month minimum recovery is what the doctor told us," Cashman said.

The injury left the Yankees reeling. The Yankees began the American League Championship Series Saturday night against Detroit, and they had fought into extra innings against the Tigers, including a dramatic ninth-inning comeback before they eventually fell 6-4. But in the clubhouse after the game it seemed like only Jeter's injury mattered.

"It was tough," said first baseman Mark Teixeira. "Really disappointed. Obviously with the game, but more importantly Derek, with his health. It is just really tough."

Still, Cashman spoke of the importance of the team bouncing back immediatelyâ€"which they will need to do with Game 2 set for 4:07 p.m. Sunday.

"It is a tough loss, but it's not going to be something we let derail us," Cashman said. "It is tough to lose any important player, and Derek's obviously been as important as anybody, but now he's been taken out."
