Question by Brad F: Is the new "Star Trek" movie a complete remake of the franchise or is it a prequel of the existing movies? Meaning the last 3 Star Wars movies were prequels of the original 3 movies, but "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" were a remake of the original franchise and had nothing to do with the previous movies, except it was the same characters. Best answer for Is the new "Star Trek" movie a complete remake of the franchise or is it a prequel of the existing movies?:

It is intended to be a prequel to the original series, not just the movies. It will tell the story of how the crew got started. No doubt the technology will seem more advanced than what we saw in the series, but I think we can live with that.

No, the new star trek movie is not a remake it is definitely a prequel, starting from when James T Kirk was a little boy, up to the time he is in Star Fleet. Also they show Spock as a boy too and the difficulty he had growing up half human, him meeting Kirk for the first time, all the characters from the original series meeting for the first time... This time period is before the go on their "five year mission to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations..." so before the TV series with William Shatner.

I believe that this new movie is a retooling of the original franchise. The only similarities , it seems, is that Spock is a Vulcan, Scotty is a Scotsman, etc etc...But Spock is nothing like Nimoy's Spock, etc etc...

Time wise it is a prequal, however what I have gathered from writer interveiws is that there is time travel involved and I think that the time travel will set events in play that will reboot Trek.

Short answer: BOTH There are technically spoilers in my answer, but nothing major. The story begins in the long-established Star Trek timeline that began with the original series in the 1960s. About 30 years or so after the last movie, Star Trek: Nemesis, Spock (the Leonard Nimoy Spock) is still involved in the Vulcan-Romulan unification (first seen in The Next Generation series) and events there involve someone traveling back in time. That time trip results in an alternate history wherein the reboot feel, style, & characterizations come into play. So instead of ignoring and/or erasing a vast history of produced Star Trek lore with a huge fanbase to alienate, it establishes the existence of a parallel timeline in which a rebooted franchise can begin yet honor its roots. These were the rumors for a while and then IDW published an official comic (Star Trek: Countdown) that is the lead-in to the movie. That lead-in definitively confirmed the movie's canonical genesis. It's very exciting.

The bodies of four women and one man were found inside Fero's Bar and Grill early Wednesday morning, Oct. 17. (Jordan Steffen, The Denver Post)

Denver police and fire officials are on scene of an arson-homicide investigation after five bodies were found inside a bar and grill early Wednesday morning.

Denver Police Chief Robert White said the call came in around 1:50 a.m. reporting a fire at Fero's Bar and Grill, located at 351 South Colorado Boulevard.

Firefighters battling the blaze discovered the bodies of four women and one man inside. They were pronounced dead at the scene, White said.

"It appears there was some trauma to the bodies, it also appears to be an arson," White said at an impromptu 5:30 a.m. news conference.

White would not elaborate on the nature of the trauma.

The names of the victims were not immediately released, and autopsies

were pending.

White said it was unclear if the bar was closed or in the process of closing at the time.

Southbound Colorado Boulevard is closed between Alameda and Virginia avenues due to the ongoing investigation. Northbound lanes have reopened.
