Baef Plays DAYZ - Part 3 - The Hope

Barton Silverman/The New York Times

C. C. Sabathia reacted after striking out J. J. Hardy in the eighth inning.

It took well over a month of unrelenting high-tension baseball and five more games into the playoffs, but the Yankees finally disposed of the Baltimore Orioles.

On a chilly afternoon that stretched into an even cooler evening, the Yankees beat the Orioles, 3-1, in Game 5 of the teams’ division series and advanced to their third American League Championship Series in the last four years.

They will play the Detroit Tigers, with Game 1 of that series Saturday night at Yankee Stadium in a rematch of last year’s division series, which the Tigers won in five games.

The Orioles, one of baseball’s most surprising teams, go home after a valiant season in which they shadowed the Yankees almost game for game and win for win over the final month of the season. Including the playoffs, the two teams played 23 times this season, and the Yankees won 12.

C. C. Sabathia was masterly, throwing a complete game and holding the Orioles to only one run and four hits while the Yankees’ offense finally gave its starting pitcher a lead to protect.

Mark Teixeira scored in the fifth on Raul Ibanez’s base hit, Derek Jeter scored another run in the sixth on Ichiro Suzuki’s double, and Curtis Granderson hit an arcing home run into the second deck in right field in the seventh.

The Orioles scored a run in the eighth and then loaded the bases with one out, but Sabathia struck out Nate McLouth, and then Jeter threw out J. J. Hardy on a soft grounder to end the inning.

Sabathia retired the Orioles in order in the ninth and the players ran out of the dugout. Alex Rodriguez, who was benched for Game 5 because of his recent slump, joined the celebration. Manager Joe Girardi called benching Rodriguez a difficult decision, but he said he thought the team had a better chance to win with Eric Chavez at third base and Ibanez at designated hitter.

With the 5:07 p.m. start time, the fans were late arriving to the game, and in the tense early innings the energy and noise levels in the Stadium were decidedly subdued. Jason Hammel, the Orioles’ starter, was shutting down the Yankees, making Game 5 seem like a continuation of Game 4, which the Yankees lost, 2-1, in 13 innings.

Teixeira collected the Yankees’ first hit leading off the fifth inning with a single into right field. With Ibanez at the plate, Teixeira surprised just about everyone by stealing second base.

Teixeira missed most of September with a left calf strain, and when he first returned, he was favoring the leg and able to run at only a fraction of his normal speed. But the injury gradually began to heal, and Teixeira showed no limitations as he stole second.

His adventurous trip around the bases continued when Ibanez hit a sharp ground ball up the middle. Teixeira immediately broke for third, and he continued home when the ball sneaked through the infield for a single, giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead.

The rally was snuffed when Nick Swisher hit into a double play. Curtis Granderson, who had only one hit in 16 at-bats in the first four games of the series, hit a single to center and stole second with Russell Martin at the plate, but Martin lined out to center to end the inning.

In the top of the sixth, the Orioles thought they had tied the score on McLouth’s drive down the right-field line, but the umpires ruled that the ball was foul by a few centimeters. Orioles Manager Buck Showalter argued the call and asked the umpires to review it, which they did, and the original ruling was upheld.

For the Yankees, it was only a long, scary strike. After the delay, Sabathia strick out McLouth with one additional pitch.

In the bottom of the inning, the Yankees came up with another big hit. Jeter walked and Suzuki rifled a double off the wall in right-center field. Jeter scampered home to give the Yankees a 2-0 advantage.

Robinson Cano struck out looking, and the Orioles intentionally walked Teixeira. That was the end for Hammel. Showalter brought in the left-hander Troy Patton to pitch to Ibanez, who blistered one tantalizing ball down the right-field line. But it landed foul by a foot, and Ibanez struck out on the next pitch.

Rodriguez, for his part, watched the action form the bench, clapping and chatting with teammates. He went through pregame warm-ups and said he would be ready to enter when called upon, although he never was. He said he was not happy about the decision, but was not angry at Girardi.

“It’s never about Joe,” Rodriguez said. “I always have to look in the mirror and do what I can do to do the best I can.”

Girardi said that Rodriguez has been struggling so much against right-handers in the series â€" 0 for 11 with 7 strikeouts â€" that he decided to make the radical move and not worry about the long-term consequences.

“You can’t think about that now,” Girardi said. “You have to think about winning a game. This isn’t June. This is October.”

And for the Yankees, it continues.
