KANSAS CITY, Mo. â" Jim Leyland called it one of the most difficult games heâs ever had to manage, tougher than Game 7 of the World Series, even though there was nothing at stake for his team.
There was plenty at stake for his players.
Insight on the Nationals and all the latest news from Post reporters Adam Kilgore and James Wagner.
The Washington Postâs Barry Svrluga, Chico Harlan, Adam Kilgore, James Wagner and columnist Thomas Boswell recall the journey of the Washington Nationals since the team moved from Montreal to winning its first division title in 77 years, and all the good and bad moments in between.
The spotlight Wednesday night was squarely on Miguel Cabrera, who became the first player in 45 years to win the Triple Crown. But there was also pressure on Austin Jackson to hit .300, and on Max Scherzer to show that his sore right shoulder was ready for the postseason.
Everything worked out perfectly for Leyland, including the outcome of the game â" his AL Central champion Tigers beat Kansas City 1-0 on a double by Jackson in the fifth inning, which helped him achieve his own milestone.
âIt was just a great night for baseball. It couldnât have worked out better,â Leyland said afterward. âIt was a weird evening, but everything turned out great.â
First and foremost for Cabrera, one of baseballâs most complete hitters.
He went 0 for 2 with a strikeout before leaving in the fourth inning, and finished with an AL-leading .330 average, 44 homers and 139 RBIs, becoming just the 15th player to win the Triple Crown. The last player to achieve it was Bostonâs Carl Yastrzemski in 1967.
âRight now I feel most grateful,â Cabrera said. âItâs an unbelievable feeling.â
Scherzer wound up pitching four innings for Detroit, which will open the postseason Saturday at home against Oakland. The bullpen took over from there, with Luis Marte (1-0) picking up the win and Luke Putkonen his first career save.
The only run of the game came off the Royalsâ Luis Mendoza (8-10), though that was hardly relevant on what turned out to be a memorable night in Kansas City.
The crowd at Kauffman Stadium gave Cabrera a standing ovation before he flied out in the first inning. He struck out in the fourth inning but remained in the game, allowing Leyland to remove him with two outs to another standing ovation.
Cabrera high-fived his teammates as he descended into the Detroit dugout, and then sheepishly walked to the top step and waved his helmet, almost as if heâd been playing at home.
âOur fans are great. Weâve seen that all year,â Royals manager Ned Yost said. âOur whole team was doing the same thing, giving him a standing ovation. What he did was amazing.â
Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig offered Cabrera his congratulations, calling the Triple Crown âa remarkable achievement that places him amongst an elite few in all of baseball history.â
âMiguel has long been one of the most accomplished hitters in the game,â Selig said, âand this recognition is one that he will be able to cherish for the rest of his career.â
Cabreraâs milestone wasnât official until the Yankees pinch hit for Curtis Granderson in their game against the Boston Red Sox. Granderson had homered twice to reach 43 for the year, tied with the Rangersâ Josh Hamilton and one shy of the Tigers third baseman.
Cabrera finished four points better than the Anglesâ Mike Trout, his biggest competition for MVP, to win his second straight batting title. Cabrera was the runaway leader with 139 RBIs.
Question by Samurott: What is the new "designer puppy" going around? I see a lot. I'd never ever get one. All my dogs come from shelters or reputable breeders. But, what is the new "must have" from puppy mills. I never said I wanted to get a puppy mill dog! Please read carefully. I said I was curious. My dogs are from shelters and breeders. I'm not an idiot. I don't want a dog with such issues. Best answer for What is the new "designer puppy" going around?:
Answer by ladystang
mini aussie same as any byb/mills
Answer by Lauren T â¥
Omg this is kinda repulsive. You're getting a dog because it's a "must have"? Every dog "must have" a home. And puppy mills? You can't support that kind of organization..that's horrid. Get a dog from a shelter that you connect with. That's the "must have" dog. The one that you have a connection with.

I'm not sure what the newest mutt scam is, but I did have to google "double doodle" to find out what they were....
Answer by Yorkies - Dogs, not Dolls!
I am not sure, but this website made me laugh so hard! http://www.designermixes.org/breeds/submit_new_breed.aspx I am not sure what new poorly bred dogs are out there, but new ones I have heard of are the Daisy Dog (a three way cross between a poodle and Shih Tzu parent and a Bichon) and Poogle (Pug and Beagle, smaller than the so called "Puggle", which is also a Pug/Beagle mix).
Answer by Broadway Girl luvurdogforevr adoptdon'tshop!
If you read the message lauren, then you would know that they do not support puppy mills and only get their dogs from shelters or reputable breeder...they are not looking to adopt/buy it is more of a curious question...i would say pom...they are ALWAYS in petland....they were using one as an advertisement at the mall...made me sad...the puppy looked very sick...my friend also has one from petland that is a sheltie pom mix....she got it BEFORE she knew about puppymills...and will now get her pets from animal shelters.

lady standing : the mini aussie (american shepherd) is now recognized in the AKC foundation stock service. i would consider it a badly bred new breed but not a designer breed because they are what happened from badly bred purebred aussies...not two separate breeds...http://www.akc.org/breeds/miniature_american_shepherd/ still don't believe me i have added a link to the akc FSS here and a link to the mini aussie/ american shepherd club towards the bottom as well as a quote stating their relation to the name mini Australian shepherds as for the main q: i think some of it is dying down i dont hear or see as much...its not gone but its not as bad as it was..thus not many new designer mutt names floating about. still alot but not AS MUCH. choodle porky walrus chorky chiweenie pocket pit bulls noodle ADD: live love bark ...i have posted the link to the AKC Foundation stock service where the mini aussie aka mini american shepherd is. also a quote from the mini american shepherd club of the US "The breed was formed by a split of the Australian Shepherd breed in AKC, and the incorporation of dogs previously known as Miniature Australian Shepherds and also known as North American Shepherds" http://www.mascusa.org/ FSS is where BREEDS start the process of being fully recognized all of the breeds currently in the AKC were in the AKC's partial registration of the FSS before being fully recognized most recently the Cane Corso. so some of the mini aussies are breeding true and some are just plane badly bred. and if you go to their website it practically states that yes they are badly bred they separated from the Australian shepherd club because their dogs didnt meet the standard now they are breeding for these other standards. they are partially registered so the AKC can monitor the breeds growth and development and fanfare before it becomes fully installed into the AKC. they arent mutts "pomchis" they are badly bred aussies that separated from the rest so i wouldnt consider them a designer breed. Live love bark: that is all i am trying to say they are PUREBRED but badly bred purebreds trying to make themselves into a new breed...designer breeds are mutts simple as that...thus the mini aussie is not a designer breed... here: http://www.akc.org/breeds/fss_breeds.cfm as i said its under mini american shepherd because they couldnt go by mini aussie messy split..it talks about it on the club page i posted http://www.mascusa.org/ "AKC Foundation Stock Service®. The AKC provides this service to allow these purebred breeds to continue to develop while providing them with the security of a reliable and reputable avenue to maintain their records. FSS® breeds are not eligible for AKC registration. Several of the FSS breeds are approved to compete in AKC Companion Events." notice it does not say mutt but BREED
Answer by Live, Love, Bark!
There a new "designer" name popping up every few weeks like yokishon or German Taco dog.(GAG) They are all just throw together mixes with a silly made up name to get attention. And the Mini Aussie Is NOT recognized by any reputable registry, and never will be. It has no purpose nor does it breed true. Read the info again.." FSS® breeds are not eligible for AKC registration. " They still don't bred true and still aren't recognized... "None of the clubs are affiliated with the AKC at this time (except for the coonhound national breed clubs)". "mini american shepherd club of the US " far cry from the AKC or any other solid registry. There's a pomchi club of america too..does that make them legit? nope Bottom line..are they fully recognized and breeding true? Nope.. so you wouldn't consider them designer breed ..that's the catch all right there..thank you could you post the list? I can't find the mini aussie listed anywhere? I was asking Horse lover since she said it was listed as a breed..it's not..period.

Maltipoos are big in my area. I did check out the AKC website and in does list the Mini Aussie as an addition in 2012.

"Designer Puppy's" are mix breeds. like a Labrador (labrador x poodle) they look cute. they are not a recognized breed. many are found in puppy farms (puppy mills) because of how easy they are to produce. a pure breed dog needs to be bread out of any imperfections and health issues. cross breeding is much easier and puppy farms love this because they can mass produce.
