DENVER â€" The 2012 presidential election will enter the final stretch Wednesday night when President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney meet on the debate stage here at the University of Denver.

For Romney, the event is a critical opportunity to reverse the momentum of a race that has turned against him in the last month. The former Massachusetts governor is trailing Obama by slim margins nationally and in swing states across the country, and enters this evening’s debate under pressure to regain control of the fight over the state of the economy.

Obama will for the first time have to rebut Romney’s insistent criticism of his record â€" on issues from job creation to health care, to taxes and welfare reform â€" standing on the same stage as his Republican challenger.

Both candidates have spent much of the last week in closed-door debate prep sessions. Obama spent the weekend sparring in Las Vegas with Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, who has been playing the role of Romney in trial debates. Romney arrived in Denver Monday and has spent much of his time in private meetings with advisers, including Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, his debate-prep partner and Obama stand-in.

The topic of tonight’s debate â€" domestic policy â€" covers a swath of issues that represent the most hotly-contested ground in the 2012 campaign, including taxes, health care and the sluggish pace of the nation’s economic recovery. Former PBS “NewsHour” anchor Jim Lehrer will moderate.

An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll published this week underscored the high stakes of the debut debate: 38 percent of voters said the debates would be “extremely important” or “quite important” in determining their votes.

Still, barring a major error by one candidate or the other, it’s unclear how much debates can be expected to move a highly polarized national electorate. The latest POLITICO/George Washington University Battleground Poll found that 88 percent of voters had already decided firmly whether to reelect Obama or replace him, with the president holding a 4-point edge on that question.

While the campaigns have worked to downplay their candidates’ debating abilities, both Obama and Romney are viewed as skillful combatants who are prone to the occasional caustic remark. They have exhibited little mutual affection on the campaign trail, though both are wary of appearing openly contemptuous of the other in a forum where personality and body language can shape voter perceptions.

Obama and Romney will meet on the debate stage only two more times: at a town hall-style debate at New York’s Hofstra University on Oct. 16, and in Boca Raton, Fla., on Oct. 22 for a foreign policy-focused event.

The two vice presidential candidates, Joe Biden and Paul Ryan, will also debate at Centre College in Kentucky next week.

The Romney and Obama campaigns were relatively quiet ahead of the big fight night in Denver, aside from a few last-minute attempts to raise expectations for the opposing candidate and pre-spin the press on issues they hope to dominate.
