NEW YORK â" Baltimore Orioles left fielder Nate McLouth joked Thursday afternoon that there is little chance he would have seen footage of his teamâs crushing loss at Yankee Stadium the night before.
âWell, my wife is on this trip, so I can promise you weâre not watching many highlights after the game,â McLouth said. âUnless theyâre on the Food Network.â
McLouth and his missus might consider changing their viewing habits after Thursday nightâs 2-1 victory in 13 innings over the New York Yankees in Game 4 of their American League Division Series. McLouth hit a solo home run and made a nifty catch in left field that kept the Orioles in a game they eventually won when J.J. Hardy doubled in Manny Machado to tie the series at two games apiece and force the decisive game here Friday.
Machado led off the top of the 13th with a line drive over the glove of leaping second baseman Robinson Cano and slid into second with a double. McLouth grounded out, moving Machado to third.
J.J. Hardy doubled off the left field wall to drive in Machado for a 2-1 lead. New York brought in lefty Clay Rapada to face Chris Davis, who grounded out for the second out. Derek Lowe then entered to face Adam Jones, who grounded out to the pitcher.
To pitch the bottom of the 13th, the Orioles brought in closer Jim Johnson, their eighth pitcher of the night. Johnson, making his fourth appearance of the series, had given up five runs in the ninth inning of a Game 1 loss in Baltimore, earned a save with a scoreless ninth in Game 2, then allowed the game-tying homer in the ninth in Game 3.
Baltimore Manager Buck Showalter had continuously voiced his support for the major league saves leader, and Johnson rewarded that trust at the most critical point of the series yet for the Orioles, who faced elimination in their first playoff appearance in 15 years.
Johnson struck out Mark Texeira looking, Cano lined out to left field and pinch-hitter Eric Chavez lined out to third to end the 4-hour 31-minute game.
Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain was forced to leave the game in the top of the 12th. Matt Wieters led off the inning with a broken-bat single to left field; the barrel flew straight at Chamberlain, hitting him on the arm and back. After receiving attention from the Yankeesâ medical staff and trying a few warmup pitches, Chamberlain exited with a contusion to his right elbow. X-rays were negative.
Chamberlain was replaced by right-hander David Phelps, who was making his postseason debut and was with the big-league team for three stints this season. But Phelps retired Lew Ford, Mark Reynolds and Robert Andino in order.
The Orioles opened the scoring in the fifth inning when McLouth, a .140 hitter with the Pittsburgh Pirates the first half of the season before latching on with the Orioles, hit a solo home run to lead off the inning. In the bottom of the fifth, he started an inning-ending double play with a leaping catch toward the wall in left field.
Orioles starting pitcher Joe Saunders (West Springfield) pitched 52/ 3 strong innings, giving up one run on three hits with five strikeouts and four walks. In the Oriolesâ five postseason games, their starting pitchers have allowed six earned runs in 301/ 3 innings for a 1.78 ERA. They have struck out 25 and walked 10, one intentionally.
âHeâs just got a lot of moxie on the mound, and heâs not afraid to pitch to contact,â McLouth said of Saunders before the game. âHeâs not afraid to throw strikes.â
The Yankees got at least one runner on in each of the six innings against Saunders, including the leadoff batters in the second and third. New York wasted a leadoff double by Jayson Nix in the third when Saunders rallied to fan the top three batters in the lineup â" Derek Jeter (in a 13-pitch at-bat), Ichiro Suzuki and Mark Teixeira. The Orioles turned inning-ending double plays in the fourth and fifth.
The Yankees tied the game in the sixth when Jeter led off with a double, took third on a Suzuki sacrifice and, after Teixeira walked, scored on a groundout by Robinson Cano, the last batter faced by Saunders. Reliever Tommy Hunter struck out Alex Rodriguez to end the inning.
The Yankees got two more runners on in the seventh without scoring, and in the eighth, Suzuki and Teixiera led off with singles off reliever Luis Ayala. Both moved up on a Cano groundout off Brian Matusz, the only batter the left-hander faced. With one out and two runners in scoring position of the 1-1 game, Orioles right-hander Darren OâDay, the sixth pitcher of the night, struck out Rodriguez, eliciting a chorus of boos from the sellout crowd of 49,307. The next batter, Nick Swisher, flied out to right field.
Yankees starting pitcher Phil Hughes threw 62/ 3 innings, allowing four hits and one run. He struck out eight and walked three.
The Yankees were playing for the first time since the announcement that Manager Joe Girardiâs father, Jerry, had died Saturday in Illinois at age 81. Girardi said he had hoped to conceal that news until after the divisional series. The elder Girardi had Alzheimerâs disease, a cause for which the younger Girardi does extensive work. There was a moment of silence before the game for the elder Girardi.
