Question by Michael L: how to get an insurance company to underwrite a new " type" of policy? II have an Idea for a new type of insurance that is not in the market place. The actuary has gone over the numbers and they work. This "type" of insurance would be a win-win situation for all involved (both the insured and the insurer). I can't talk to an gent , and can't seem to find the right person to talk to at the Insurance Company itself. How do I go about trying to get this new "type" of policy in the marketplace? Answer by mbrcatz You need a marketing company, and you need to provide legally approved policy forms for the states that you want to sell the coverage in, and you'll need to provide the actuarial data - including sources for claims projections. Look, it's exceeding unusual for someone who is not "in" the insurance industry already, to have a WORKABLE idea for a new type of insurance. And you need more than ONE actuary, to "go over the numbers". How exactly do you plan on making any money off of this? If you're hoping that an insurance company will say, "hey, we never thought of THAT kind of policy before!" and will throw you six figures as a reward, well, it doesn't WORK that way. And frankly, there are SO MANY different types of insurance in the market today, it's much more likely that YOU don't have experience with that particular coverage, than "the coverage doesn't exist". Without proposed rates and projected claims, it's going to be impossible for an actuary to tell you if the numbers will actually work or not . . . but just for yucks, why don't you edit your question, and post the raw loss ratio that your actuary gave you, for this line of coverage. If he didn't give you one - the numbers don't work.
